This week in music 05.21.2014

This week’s featured releases come from AKB48 and Tokyo Girls’ Style.

AKB48 – “Labrador Retriever

It’s 48G senbatsu voting season yet again folks and this single right here is what you need to buy to support your favorite, or favorites if you roll like that. Anyway, eh “Labrador Retriever” is pretty cookie cutter as far as AKB summer songs go. It does the job I suppose. I’m not really sure what else to say, it’s fine and it’s not like people are actually buying it for the music anyway so whatever. If you are interested in the music for some reason, the b-side previews that I’ve heard sound pretty decent. Probably some of the better offerings from AKB as of late.

Tokyo Girls’ Style – “Jujika

Tokyo Girls’ Style providing a song for a horror movie was always going to produce an interesting outcome. I knew from past experience that I should be expecting some kind of mature song but I didn’t think we’d get one quite as gothic and melancholic as “Jujika” is. Don’t get me wrong, that’s certainly not a slight against the song because it’s fantastic. It’s just caught me off guard is all. Avex has been rather overtly trying to mature up TGS for a while now (your opinion on this being good or bad may vary) and I think this is probably the most apparent attempt yet. I support it but I doubt the next single is going to be quite as dark as this one so if this isn’t your thing, you’re probably going to be okay.

Monochrome” by Dancing Dolls
Zenbu OK” by DiNity
Junsui na Fujunbutsu” by StylipS

This week’s other releases have a little bit of everything. Dancing Dolls give us a rather cool sounding dance song in the form of “Monochrome”, while StylipS give us a very energetic, anime inspired number. Then we round things out with DiNity who provide you with your indie idol fix.
