This week in music 02.04.2015

This week’s featured releases come from ANGERME and Vanilla Beans.

ANGERME – “Taiki Bansei / Otome no Gyakushuu

Sometimes idol groups need to reinvent themselves. Although some might disagree, you really can’t do the same thing for all eternity. Signs of madness and all that. Change can be a good thing, even if it involves a rather unfortunate name change like in the case of S/mileage. Now called ANGERME (that’s “Anjurumu”, not that it matters now) and with some new faces to breathe some fresh air into the line-up, this single is somewhat of a re-debut for the group. As with any debut, you want to make an impression and this single does just that. If this is any indication of the quality of music that will be coming out of Hello! Project going forward, 2015 looks to be a very promising year.

Vanilla Beans – “Vanilla Beans IV

“Vanilla Beans IV” is Vanilla Beans’ first new album in over two years. Two years is a very long time in any industry and it’s especially true in the idol business. Trends, and member line-ups can go through a number of iterations and the landscape never stays the same for long. Then we have Vanilla Beans, coming to us straight out of the 80s, a better time where music wasn’t devoid of creativity and other such elitest statements. While some groups need a breath of fresh air, groups like Vanilla Beans are able to play off of people’s nostalgia while still pumping out some great tunes. They’ve done it for 4 albums now and if the quality remains as high as it has been, long may it continue.

A fairly relaxed week of releases with ANGERME likely being the highlight for most people. Things should start to pick up in the coming months though so please do keep checking back every Monday for a new This Week in Music. Until next time.

If you missed any of the last few weeks’ worth of new music you can check out past editions of This Week in Music here.
