This week in music

This week’s featured releases come from Babyraids and Morning Musume ’14.

Babyraids – “Koi wa Panic

The first of our featured release double-header this week comes from Babyraids. You probably know them from that one Amachan thing they did. That aside, Babyraids have always been a fairly frustrating group to me music-wise. For every “JUMP” there’s two or three rather average and mostly forgettable singles. “Koi wa Panic” on an initial listen feels very understated. It doesn’t jump out and grab you by the front of your shirt but instead it almost sneaks up on you after a couple of listens. What I initially thought was a fairly basic mid-tempo pop song actually ended up growing on me and I’m pretty glad it did. This single should definitely be on your radar this week.

Morning Musume ’14 – “Egao no Kimi wa Taiyou sa / Kimi no Kawari wa Iyashinai / What is LOVE?

Morning Musume, or Morning Musume ’14 as they would like to be referred to now are also finally releasing their new single this week. This comes after them drip feeding us the accompanying PVs over the last several weeks. I wrote a fairly extensive review which you can read here but if you want the bare bones, I really like the single. If you liked their previous single “Wagamama Ki no Mama Ai no Joke / Ai no Gundan” then you’ll probably like this one too. Otherwise, it’s the same style of music that you’ve probably been complaining about for the last year and a half.

“(1) The Produce” by Bakusute Sotokanda Icchoume
Star Ting” by hy4_4yh
“Hiyake Machine” by Linda Sansei

There isn’t a whole lot else coming out this week but I would suggest checking out Bakusute Sotokanda Icchoume’s debut album if you’ve never listened to any of their work before. Apart from that, hy4_4yh usually makes for an interesting listen too. Until next time.
