This Week in Music 01.23.2013

Thankfully for all involved, this week is a lot quieter on the new release front. That doesn’t mean that there isn’t still some cool tunes coming out but after the past couple of weeks, this one seems really light by comparison. Before we get right into things, huge props to Shiritsu Ebisu Chuugaku who had a monster week on the Oricon chart last week. With well in excess of THIRTY FOUR THOUSAND COPIES of their “Ume” single sold at the time of writing this, if ever you needed proof that the “indie” scene (I hate that term but that’s what everyone calls groups that aren’t BlahBlahBlah48 or Hello!Project) is alive and well then here it is.

So, huge props to Ebichu now let’s get on with the show.

AKB48 – “Team 4 1st stage “Boku no Taiyou” -studio recordings collection-“

First up this week we have the forgotten AKB48 stage album. I have no idea why Team 4’s “Boku no Taiyou” is shipping three weeks after all of the other albums but I suppose I should just be thankful that we’re even getting it in the first place. Considering how much of an afterthought Team 4 ended up being I wouldn’t have been surprised if this never saw the light of day. I’m not entirely sure what to say about this album, if you’re a Team 4 fan like me then you should obviously be interested in this and I suppose most of you will download it just so you have the complete collection anyway.

Morning Musume – “Help Me!!

This week’s other “big” release comes from Morning Musume. “Help Me!!” sees Tsunku and the girls continue the electronica theme that has been a feature of much of their work over the course of the past year. I suppose I’m a little disappointed that things are starting to sound recycled already but I’ll take this over many of the terrible singles that Morning Musume have released in the past three or four years. Hate on the costumes and PV all you want but “Help Me!!” is a pretty solid song, although perhaps Tsunku could consider changing things up a little for the group’s next outing.

“Killer Tune” by Himekyun Fruit Can
“Cindere Love! / Peaceful World -Akita No Senshi Kiritanpo-” by Pramo
Kuchibiru Network” by Sunmyu

Hopefully you guys are checking out the groups I mention in the “Also This Week” section. There’s some pretty neat stuff going on outside of the AKS and Hello!Project bubble and I hope in some small way that I’m drawing attention to it. Let me know in the comments if that section or this column has turned you on to any new groups.
