Tokyo Performance Doll are back with a new release that just happens to serve as the kz (livetune) penned ending theme for the TV anime “BEATLESS”. Down to six members, TPD dance in a pastel wonderland along to the electro beats of “Shapeless”. In white outfits to accentuate the central motif of the promotional video, Tokyo Performance Doll look absolutely stunning visually anchored by the radiance of Jonishi Seira. An acoustic piano accompanies Takashima Nana’s lovely verse performance, but the beats soon emerge with the strong chorus melodies. “Shapeless” is a departure from the funkiness of “Trick U” that puts the group squarely into realm of electro-dance idols. Visually, Tokyo Performance Doll’s sharp choreography gets washed with translucent cutout geometry. Pastel gels impart the colors on the girls’ skin as the shapes fly upward with increasing rapidity. And, yes, the irony of a song called “Shapeless” from an anime called “BEATLESS” being crammed with shapes and beats is not lost on me. Got it. Tokyo Performance Doll’s 7th single “Shapeless” hits the record store shelves June 6, 2018.
