Cheeky Parade interview at Japan Expo LA 2015

Cheeky Parade at Japan Expo LA 2015

Cheeky Parade is a 9 member idol group formed on February 19th, 2012 as the second artist under avex’s idol label, “iDOL Street.”

Cheeky Parade debuted with BUNBUN NINE9′ on January 9th, 2013, and released C.P.U.!? and Mugendai Shoujo ∀ later that year. Their first three singles all reached the top 5 on Oricon charts. You may also know of them from their recent hits, CANDY POP GALAXY BOMB!!, M.O.N.ST@R, and Colorful Starlight.

They have a unique personality and are incredibly energetic both onstage and off. Their goal is to become an idol group like no other. We spent some time with them at Japan Expo LA 2015 and asked them about their experiences here in the states and as an idol group.

What kind of music do you like listening to?

Yuriya: I like sad songs.

Mariya: Lately, I’ve been into rock music!

Asami: Since I like idols, I like listening to idol songs.

Hina: I listen to a lot of Western music.

What kind of goal do you want to achieve in Cheeky Parade?

Yuna: We are doing overseas concerts here, so I would like for us to become more popular all over the world. I would want all of Japan to know who we are and when we go overseas, people would know us and come meet us at the airports. That is the kind of big group that we would want us to become.

What made you want to become an idol and/or performer?

Yuriya: In the past I really liked music, dance, and expressing myself. We do all of that in Cheeky Parade, singing, dancing, putting on lives and when many people come to see us, it’s very fun. I think everyone feels that way too.

*other members nod in agreement*

If you were a dessert, what would you want to be and why?

All: EEEH???

Yuriya: A dessert huh?

Mariya: Black sesame ice cream.

Yuna and Yuriya: And the reason?

Mariya: It’s my favorite flavor of ice cream.

Seran: Whaaat!?

Yuriya: That’s not a reason!

Mariya: The ice cream itself is very neat and refreshing. And it’s cool that it’s blackish compared to other ice creams.

Seran: Creme brulee! The top is very hard right? It usually takes awhile for me to open up to people but once that wall is broken, we’d have a rich relationship which is why I think creme brulee.

Momoka:  I think I am the baked portion of baked pudding. *Looks at her arm*. Anyway, it’s white, which is why.

Hina: Yes. I’m regular pudding.

Yuriya: There’s a lot of puddings!

Hina: My name is Hina but when I was younger, I was called “Purin-chan” so that’s why.

Asami: I think I’d be mochi. Ummm *laughs* I guess it’s not a dessert *laughs*. But I think it can sort of be considered a dessert. I like to stick and be clingy towards people which is why I thought I’d be mochi.

Yuriya: Which is annoying *laughs*.

Asami: Don’t say that!

Marin: I think I’d be Haribo’s gummy bears which is more like candy than dessert. When you first look at it you wonder if it’s edible.

Hina: Ahhhhhhh.

Marin: Hard gummy candy is tough but the more you chew it, the more you understand the person or something like that.

Everyone: That’s true.

Asami: Well said.

Yuna: I think I’d be brownies.

Momoka: You’re just saying that because you like it *laughs*.

Yuna: Well also simply because I like them, but chocolate is both sweet and bitter….ah wait, then I’d be describing chocolate then *laughs*.

Everyone: *Laughs*.

Yuna: Anyway, brownies are my favorite so I think brownies.

Rino: I think I’d be lemon sherbet.

Hina & Yuriya: Ah yeah!

Rino: On the inside, I’m a pretty blunt person and a bit dry so when you look at it that way, I feel that I am lemon sherbet.

Yuriya: I think I’m matcha.

Hina: Huh? You mean the sweets?

Yuriya: I’m very Japanese and I’m told that I’m very traditional so I thought I’d be the sweets that are representative of Japan.

Can you give a message to your fans?

Yes, at this Japan Expo, beginning with the pre-event, we were able to perform 3 concerts! This month, we were able to go to 2 different places aboard, France and LA so we’re really happy about that. We are really happy to see that there are people other than Japanese fans cheering for us. We will become even more famous and work even harder in Japan and we want to go overseas even more so we’d appreciate it if you keep watching over us. Thank you for your support.

Cheeky Parade performed a total of 3 times here in Los Angeles and they put on a fantastic live show! Check them out if you haven’t yet!
