This Week in Music 12.26.2012

Twas the night before Christmas, when all through the house, not a creature was stirring, not even a mouse. Well, except for the couple new singles that are coming out this week. Not even the idol industry stops for Christmas so neither am I. Let’s see what we have on offer this week.

Kasai Tomomi – “Masaka”

First up we have AKB48’s (for a little while longer anyway) Kasai Tomomi and her debut solo single “Masaka”. It’s a pretty interesting one for a number of reasons. One of the main ones being that Kasai is peacing out of AKB in what can only be assumed is the not too distant future. Very interesting timing on that it has to be said. As far as the music goes, just imagine what you think a Kasai solo song would sound like and this is pretty much what you’re getting here. If that sounds like a good time to you then you’ll probably enjoy this release. The single also features solo versions of Team K’s “Dakishimeraretara” and Team B’s “Candy”.

Ono Erena – “Say!! Ippai”

This week’s other release comes from ex-AKB48 member Ono Erena. “Say!! Ippai” is the third single of her solo career and I’m starting to worry that her sound is becoming too one dimensional. Don’t get me wrong, it’s a nice enough song but the compositions are just starting to sound too samey. I suppose it’s hard to be too harsh on her since apparently she’s writing most, if not all of the songs but the shine is starting to wear off at this point. If you’ve enjoyed her last two singles and don’t mind hearing more of the same style of music then this will be right up your alley. It just doesn’t bring enough to the table for me to get too excited about it.

Not exactly ending the year on a high note but these are decent enough. Check back next week when I’ll be doing yet another pointless This Week in Music because surely I don’t have to tell you all to rush out and pick up the AKB Stage Album Collection right?
