This Week in Music 11.21.2012

Oh man, what a week this is for new releases. I think I’m going to need to go lie down in a darkened room once I’m done telling you about all of them. There’s a lot to talk about so let’s just get right down to business here.

C-ute – “② C-ute Shinsei Naru Best Album”

We’re kicking things off with C-ute and their second “Best of” album “② C-ute Shinsei Naru Best Album”. Why should you care that C-ute are releasing another album featuring the hits? Well, this album features re-recordings of nine of the group’s first eleven singles as well as a selection from the group’s more recent release history. Older fans get re-imagined versions of C-ute classics which may or may not live up to the originals and newer fans get a fantastic starting point for getting into the group. If you’ve ever wanted to check out C-ute but didn’t want to dig through their extensive back catalog then now is the time to do so. If you’d prefer to listen to the originals then “C-ute nan desu! Zen Single Atsumechaimashita! ①” is where you want to be.

Momoiro Clover Z – “Saraba, Itoshiki Kanashimi Tachi Yo”

Moving right along, we have Momoiro Clover Z and their new single “Saraba, Itoshiki Kanashimi Tachi Yo”. It’s still a very Momoiro Clover sounding song but with some fairly distinct differences. Anyone hoping that they’d get Maeyamada Kenichi back to compose this one will be left feeling very disappointed. At least as far as their a-sides are concerned, it would appear that Momoclo are attempting to transition into a more mature (but still quirky) sound. I’m personally not a huge fan of this new direction that the group seem to be taking but I suppose it has to happen eventually. I find it very hard to recommend this release, at least for the a-side. I would however encourage you to check out the b-sides which don’t appear to have undergone a more mature makeover as of yet.

Shiritsu Ebisu Chuugaku – “Ebichu No Zeppan Best -Owaranai Seishun-“

Next up on my list I have Ebichu and their debut album, which you can read the title of up above and save me from having to type it all out. It features tracks from the group’s six indie singles as well as a number of songs that have never seen a CD release before. It can be pretty difficult to track down Ebichu’s back catalog so the fact that it’s all here in one convenient place is great. I know for sure that I’ll be using this album to get people interested in the group. Why not save yourself from my badgering and check this fantastic album out for yourself. While you’re at it, go check out Ebichu’s major debut single “Karikeiyaku no Cinderella” which will be appearing in many of my end of year award categories.

Watanabe Mayu – “Hikaru Monotachi”

Last up on this long journey, we have AKB48’s Watanabe Mayu and her third solo single. “Hikaru Monotachi” takes the direction that I thought they’d take with Mayu’s music in the first place. What we have is a Perfume/Vocaloid/Techno….whatever you want to call it type song. It fits perfectly with the “Mayu is a robot lolololol” joke that’s popular among wota and fittingly she’s also a cyborg in the PV. It’s hard not to like this single on that fact alone but the song is also fairly decent. You can nitpick it and say it doesn’t bring anything new to the table but this is a nod to the fans and it can at the very least be appreciated for that. Hopefully they can finally settle on a musical direction for Mayu soon.

Okay, I’m gonna go lie down now. Ya’ll go enjoy all of this week’s new releases and I’ll see you next week when thankfully all I have to talk about is the new S/mileage single.
