This week’s featured releases come from NMB48, Shiritsu Ebisu Chuugaku and Up Up Girls (Kari).
2014 is winding down, (yes, there really are only two months left) and I guess we’re at that time of year where 48G do everything they can to squeeze one last single out of each of their groups before we tick over into the New Year. Well, NMB are up to bat this week with “Rashikunai” and I’m pretty iffy on it (HUGE shock). It’s a 48 song, so the vocals are as usual pretty suspect but for some reason they’ve buried the instrumental so deep in the mix that I can barely make it out when people are singing. I hear snippets of it here and there but I couldn’t tell you if I like it or not. It’s my opinion that average vocals can be made to sound great but a good instrumental track but here we just have really loud, average vocals being bared to the world when they really shouldn’t be. I guess “average” sums up this single pretty well actually.
Shiritsu Ebisu Chuugaku also have a new single out this week. Which is a good thing because they’re pretty much the only reason why I have even a passing interest in Stardust Promotion these days. That’s a story for another day though. Anyway, the song starts off with a classical intro which I don’t particularly care for one way or the other. I don’t really see what it adds to the song but it’s not really killing the listening experience either, it’s just there. After the intro, the song takes on a more rock-oriented vibe and we get to hear a bit of attitude behind the vocals, which is something Ebichu do particularly well in their delivery. The only thing I can really ding the song for is that it doesn’t really have a particularly strong hook but I think it gets by alright without one.
Our final featured release for this week comes from Up Up Girls. They’re still doing their crazy triple a-side shenanigans and whoever is writing and composing all of these songs is truly doing a thankless job. The single itself is a bit of a mixed bag, “Beautiful Dreamer” is a song that I honestly shouldn’t like but for whatever reason it just works for me. Then we have “Zenryoku!Pump Up!! -Ultra Mix-” which is a remix of a past a-side that I already didn’t particularly care for before they tossed some cookie cutter audio samples and mixing techniques into an already spoiled pot. Lastly we have “Itadaki Wo Mezase” which only has a live recording available at the time of writing this so I’m not 100% sure how I feel about it, but if I had to make a snap judgement I’d say it sounded pretty average. Certainly not Up Up Girls’ finest work but there’s enough there to make this one worth checking out if you have the time.
ALSO THIS WEEK:
I don’t really have anything in particular to recommend from this week’s other releases. DIVA fans will most likely want to grab their final album, Giselle4 have a new single that’s so K-Pop it hurts, you should watch Love Android’s PV and immediately find an adult afterwards and it appears that Oha Girl Chu! Chu! Chu! have been replaced by vastly inferior, younger models.
