This Week in Music 09.04.2013

This week’s featured releases come from Cheeky Parade, C-ute and HKT48.

Cheeky Parade – “Mugendai Shoujo ∀

First up this week we have Cheeky Parade with their third major label single “Mugendai Shoujo ∀”. I’m a big fan of their past releases so I was expecting something pretty good here. What I got wasn’t particularly inspiring, “Mugendai Shoujo ∀” sounds a lot like a tribute to the new Momoiro Clover Z sound and that’s not something I’m a big fan of. It’s not that it’s a particularly bad song, I just don’t particularly care for this kind of mid-tempo, trying to be clever but not really kind of thing. If you’re not a fan of Cheeky Parade’s past couple of releases (or me disliking something means you usually like it) maybe check this out, it’s certainly different.

C-ute – “⑧ Queen of J-Pop”

Next up is C-ute with their new album “⑧ Queen of J-Pop”. A bold title if ever there was one. The album features the past eight or so months of C-ute’s discography with singles such as “Kanashiki Amefuri“, “Adam to Eve no Dilemma“, “Crazy Kanzen na Otona” and “Kono Machi“. Also included are a number of new songs, including “Bagel ni Ham and Cheese” which is a very fun and pleasant song. I personally think this is a collection of C-ute’s strongest material in recent memory. I would definitely recommend checking this release out if you enjoy good idol music.

HKT48 – “Melon Juice

Last up this week we have Hakata’s very own HKT48 with their second single “Melon Juice”. I was pretty disappointed by their debut offering “Suki!Suki!Skip!” so I wasn’t expecting much from this release. What I got was a pretty catchy idol song with the kind of enthusiasm and spunk you can only get from a bunch of kids. This is the kind of music I’d hoped that HKT would do so that’s a win all day long. Sadly the b-sides are fairly mediocre and forgettable but you’re all probably going to be looping “Melon Juice” so much that you won’t even notice.

Hotaru Matsuri No Hi” by Jurin
Naguriai” by Naguriai
Samurai Girls / Waidoru Seven” by Up Up Girls (Kari)

Of the stuff I didn’t talk about, Jurin (Morning Musume’s Sato Masaki and Juice=Juice’s Miyamoto Karin) are doing the kind of song I wouldn’t normally like but somehow they’ve just casually nailed the instrumentals so it’s really good. Naguriai are a group made up of female BiS wota because why not right? Their music is kind of…out there and sounds as green as the group obviously is but there’s some promise there for sure. Then Up Up Girls round it out with yet another single release, it’s not quite on the level of “Up Up Typhoon” but still pretty good.

Let me know what you think about this week’s new releases in the comment section below.
