This week’s featured releases come from AKB48 and Negipecia.
It’s AKB election single time again kids. They had a pretty good one last year so I was kinda hoping this year wouldn’t be too bad, but then Watanabe Mayu won and the writing was on the wall. “Kokoro no Placard” is kinda like “Koisuru Fortune Cookie” but a heavily downgraded version. I don’t know, maybe it’s just me because plenty of people are making fan videos for this one too, so I guess they must like it and aren’t just trying to grab another 15 minutes of fame. As an outsider not caught up in the whirlwind of fan effort, all I see is an average song with the most obnoxious opening line ever. AKB finally broke the habit of releasing the same song every season but it looks like this is going to be their new gimmick, and who can blame them when everyone is falling over themselves to give them free publicity.
When I heard that Negicco and Especia were teaming up to do a song together, I was pretty excited. Two idol groups that I like more than most collaborating on a song? What could possibly be better than that? Well as it turns out, them not collaborating and just doing their own singles is a lot better than “Girl’s Day” turned out to be. It’s hard to put into words how disappointing this song ended up being for me. It’s not even that’s it’s terrible, it’s just so unremarkable to the point where I can’t believe this is the outcome of two groups with very distinct musical styles coming together. I’m probably being very harsh here but that’s kinda what happens when you’re invested in something and it doesn’t meet you expectations. Maybe next time.
