This week’s featured releases come from Passpo, S/mileage and Team Syachihoko.
Passpo continue their return to form this week with new single “Himawari”. After what many would agree was a fairly lackluster 2013, it seems that between last single “Perfect Sky” and this week’s new release that things are back on track for these flight attendants. I’ll happily take less singles each year if they’re all going to be a solid as what we’ve had in 2014 so far. That being said, “Himawari” probably isn’t going to instantly win a lot of people over, I know I wasn’t. It’s not the most obviously catchy song ever so it’s going to take a few listens for it to to really bed in. After I got over my initial leeriness, I really started to enjoy the song and hope that Passpo continue on this trend of rock instrumental driven music because it’s something that I think they do really well.
S/mileage are also getting in on the action this week with a new double a-side single. Thankfully this one shouldn’t cause massive heart failure for any of the fans who managed to survive the sexy S/mileage from their last single. Having said that, mature S/mileage appears to be here to stay as both songs on this single incorporate that tone, along with the EDM instrumentals that we’ve all come to expect from Hello! Project at this point. I think the change of image makes sense personally, the girls are all getting a bit older and Berryz Koubou are also disbanding/going on hiatus so maybe this is just S/mileage stepping up to fill that position in the Hello! Project hierarchy. Either way, this is a pretty good single although I hope they don’t completely do away with genki S/mileage.
Team Syachihoko – “Himatsubushi”
Last up this week we have Team Syachihoko who are releasing their first album. It feels like they’ve been around for a while so for them to only be on their first album was pretty surprising to me. Now, I personally just can’t get into Team Syachihoko for various reasons but I know a lot of people who really like them so I figured I should cover this release. Anyway, the album features past singles like “Iikurashi“, “Ai no Chikyusai” and “Shuto Iten Keikaku” as well some new songs such as “Yoroshiku Jinrui“. Like I said, they’re not really my thing but if you’re looking for something a bit off the wall then Team Syachihoko certainly offer that.

There’s a ton of other stuff that I didn’t get a chance to talk about this week. My picks from the list above would probably be 4to6 who you might know better from their voice acting roles in the Love Live anime, as well as i☆Ris and Yamaguchi Kassei Gakuen who both have very upbeat and enjoyable singles coming out this week. Until next time.
