This Week in Music 07.11.2012

Hey, it’s “This Week in Music” the weekly feature where I give you the rundown of all of the awesome (and not so awesome) music that’s coming out each week. The EVO 2012 finals are airing as I’m writing this so let’s cut the bullshit and get right down to business.

Kikkawa Yuu – “Koko Kara Hajimarunda!”

First up we have Kikkawa Yuu who is releasing her fourth single this week. It’s called “Koko Kara Hajimarunda!” and it’s a bit of a departure from the usual style of pop music that Kikkawa Yuu is known for. This release features heavy use of synthesizers and auto-tuned vocals, not too dissimilar to what you might find in a Perfume or ClariS song although perhaps not to such extremes. I guess this is to be expected given that the composer of this release apparently writes Vocaloid songs. This one may or may not be your cup of tea depending on your stance on the use of auto-tune but if you can look past that I think you’ll find a very enjoyable listening experience. All in all, Kikkawa Yuu continues her impressive run of solid solo singles and shows no signs of taking her foot off the gas.

Station♪ – “Densha De Go! Go!”

This week’s other release sees Station come out with their debut album. If my constant promotion of this group hasn’t already prompted you to check them out then you really have no excuse now. “Densha De Go! Go!” features the group’s first three singles; “Susume”, “Let’s Go Tetsudo Idol” and “Let’s Meet on the Anniversary” along with six “new” songs. I say “new” because technically all of Station‘s songs are covers but it’s not like any of you will have ever heard the originals anyway so that’s a moot point. I’m not really sure how I can sell this group any more than I have already. They’re way out in front in my “Best Newcomer” category and I’ll be really surprised if anyone comes along and displaces them.

That’s it for this week. Come back next week to hear my thoughts on the new BiS single (yaaaay) as well as the new French Kiss single (meh). Until then, I’m going back to watch some more EVO.
