This week in music 05.28.2014

This week’s featured releases come from Brand-new Idol Society, Especia, Fairies and Idoling!!!

Brand-new Idol Society – “FiNAL DANCE / Nerve”

finaldance

We’re starting the week off on a bit of a sombre note, well it’s sombre for me at least. Anyway, as most of you know, “FiNAL DANCE / Nerve” is Brand-new Idol Society’s final single before their impending break-up. It’s almost fitting in a way that for their final act of self-aware fun poking that they’re dancing around in bikinis on a beach somewhere. It’s hard not to draw comparisons with AKB48 when looking at how this release is being packaged and you can bet that it’s intentional. As far as the song goes, it’s not a particularly strong send-off but you know, it’s okay and it is kinda catchy so it has that going for it. I’ll most likely do a full post-mortem write up on BiS after their final curtain call so look out for that in the coming weeks.

Especia – “GUSTO”

gusto

Next up we have Especia, who are a personal favorite of mine so heads up, bias commentary incoming. “GUSTO” is the group’s first album and it contains a nice assortment of past singles and some new songs and remixes. Personal favorites include “Midnight Confusion“, “YA・ME・TE!” and “Adventure wa gin iro ni“. Then of course there are new offerings like “No1 Sweeper” and “Karukana“. It all comes together to form a solid example of what Especia are all about, which is a hardcore trip down memory lane to the 1980s. If you haven’t given them a try yet, you might consider checking this release out.

Fairies – “Super Hero / Love Me, Love You More

superhero

Let’s keep things rolling along and take a look at the new Fairies single next. Now, its been a minute since they last released some new music (I don’t count the album with like one new song) so I guess they figured they better give us the old double a-side special. I have to be honest though, I’m not in love with this single. “Super Hero” is 90s as all hell and it’s not the kind of 90s music that I enjoy in the slightest. Not hating, it’s just a personal opinion. Having said that, “Love Me, Love You More” sounds like it might be more my kind of jam. It’s hard to make the call though because all I’ve heard thus far is live versions of the song. I guess I’ll have to wait and see how it sounds on the actual CD.

Idoling!!! – “Kyupi❤

kyupi

Man, this turned into a bit of a marathon huh? Oh well, we’re almost at the finish line and Idoling!!! are going to help get us there. “Kyupi❤” is their latest single and I know I really shouldn’t like this song but…I kinda do? I’m not even really sure why I like it, there’s just something about it that appeals to me on some subconscious level or something. Yeah I dunno, maybe you guys will like it too? There’s a good chance if I’m feeling weird about liking it right? If this isn’t your kind of thing, I would recommend checking out Idoling!!!’s latest album “Gold Experience” instead. It’s full of really great songs and it’s a pretty good point to jump into the Idoling!!! fandom.

ALSO THIS WEEK:

“DokiDoki☆Shukurimu” by Pretty Good
“Koi Hanabi” by Young Champion Gakuen Music Club

A bunch of fairly unknown stuff rounds out this week’s other releases. Well, I guess a few of you might be familiar with the ladies of Young Champion but probably for reasons other than their musical ability. Then we have Pretty Good who live up to their name by releasing a single that sounds pretty good. Until next week.
