This week’s featured releases come from AKB48, Takoyaki Rainbow and Terashima Yufu.
Something something AKB48, something something new single, something something summer, something something. Wait a minute, where is the sun, sea and the bikinis? Talk about a curve ball, I don’t think anyone was expecting the fall single to release in May but here it is. I know people have been asking AKB to do something different but I’m not sure this is exactly what they had in mind. I wonder if that means the summer single is coming out in October. If it isn’t, then I know a few people who will be rather disappointed. Oh well, there’s always the Chinese alternative.
Takoyaki Rainbow may have lost their leader last year but that appears only to have been a speed bump on the road to becoming national idols. That’s what looks to be happening with this single, their first to be sold nationwide in Japan if the wiki I just checked is accurate. However, unlike agency colleagues Team Syachihoko, Takoyaki Rainbow give their fans exactly what they’ve come to expect with this single. Sure there’s more disco elements than usual and they have some pants that independent wrestling superstars The Young Bucks would be proud of, but it’s still the same Takoyaki Rainbow.
It’s no secret that I really like Terashima Yufu, so if she’s releasing new music there’s no way that I’m not going to talk about it. I believe…sorry, but that title is just crazy. Anyway, I believe that this is her major debut on Universal Music Japan (but really, everyone is technically signed to major labels in some guise or another anyway) and much like Takoyaki Rainbow, she delivers exactly what you’d expect from her. It’s the usual dreamy sounding vocals and instrumental melodies that you’re either going to love or hate, it works for me at least. That being said, I think it would be cool if Yufu did do some more energetic a-sides from time to time. I get that it’s not really the persona that she’s going for but it would freshen her act up a little bit.
ALSO THIS WEEK:
A pretty good week for new music all in all. Not much else that I’d like to draw your attention to apart from the new Dorothy Little Happy single. Might be an idea to check out what I’m guessing is going to be the last single before that group just implodes on itself due to the well publicized issues they’ve been going through lately. Until next time.
If you missed any of the last few weeks’ worth of new music you can check out past editions of This Week in Music here.
