This Week in Music 04.25.2012

It’s Monday again, so let’s talk about all of the new stuff coming out this week. This is “This Week in Music”, hopefully you’re all reading it on New School Kaidan and hopefully you all forgive me for missing a release last week.

Some of you may have noticed that I didn’t talk about Super☆Girls last week. The reason being that I honestly just didn’t know that it had been bumped up a week. That’s partly my fault for not checking but one of you guys could have maybe mentioned it to me before the article went up. We all have to shoulder some of the blame here. In all seriousness though, it’s not that big of a deal. These things happen and I’ve included Super☆Girls in this week’s post to make up for it

That being said, let’s take a look at what’s coming out this week.

Itano Tomomi – “10nen go no Kimi he”

First up this week we have Itano Tomomi and her third solo single “10nen go no Kimi he”. Those of you who have listened to the podcast that Team S did a few weeks back will have likely heard some of my thoughts on this single already. It’s very much in keeping with the style of Itano’s past singles so if you weren’t a fan of those then this one likely isn’t going to be to your tastes either. I wish I could say that this brings something new to the table but it really doesn’t. The song isn’t helped by the fact that Itano’s voice just can’t carry it as well as it could. However that’s not to say that the song itself is necessarily bad, it’s just a shame that it falls a little short in the vocal department. It has to be said though that I’m probably not the best person to be talking about this release because I’m really not into these mature sounding k-pop influenced songs. If for some reason you’ve never heard one of Itano’s singles before, check this one out.

Station♪ – “Kinenbi ni Aimashou”

For all four of us that care, everyone’s favorite train themed idol group Station♪ release their third single this week. Since I don’t have the single yet and there’s no preview available online I’m somewhat in the dark about this release. However I have it on good authority from my man in the field; Monkeyto that this release is just as good as their past two singles. Station♪‘s music is typically upbeat and catchy idol music so if you’re into that sort of thing you should maybe check them out. You can see a short clip of them performing their debut single “Susume” here. The more resourceful among you may also be able to find their singles uploaded online somewhere. I will say no more on that though because I’d much rather you all go out and buy their singles to support them. Any questions about the group can be directed towards either myself, del or Monkeyto on Twitter, IRC, etc.

Super☆Girls – “1,000,000☆Smile”

Last up we have “1,000,000☆Smile”, the Super☆Girls release that I missed last week. This is the group’s fourth single since their debut last year and if I’m being honest it doesn’t really do a whole lot for me. The vocals are pretty bland sounding and forgettable for the most part. The instrumentals are jazzy? Funky? I’m not really sure but I like them and they somewhat save the song for me. I think Super☆Girls fans will agree with me that this isn’t their best work which is a shame because I have liked a lot of their previous releases. If you like light and fresh sounding spring/summer songs then maybe this is for you but otherwise I’d recommend checking out their album “EveryBody JUMP!!” which I talked about in a previous “This Week in Music”. It has all of their previous singles and a host of other songs that I feel give a much better impression of the group than this release does.

That’s it for this week, join us next week on “This Week in Music” for Nogizaka46 vs Sashihara Rino. Also, Ebichu get their major label debut and S/mileage release that god awful “Dot Bikini” single.
