This week in music 01.21.2015

This week’s featured releases come from AKB48, Berryz Koubou and Negicco.

AKB48 – “Koko ga Rhodes da, Koko de Tobe!”

Hot on the heels of Nogizaka46, AKB48 present their first musical offering of 2015 in the form of a new album. I can’t say I have much time for the pretentious title but hey that’s just me. Anyway, as far as the album is concerned it’s pretty much business as usual. Disc 1 features the last year or so of singles and some select b-sides while Disc 2 (there’s 2 types because yay money!) is comprised almost entirely of new material. After a very lackluster 12 months (that even a lot of diehard fans will freely admit to), there is quite a bit of hope and expectation that these new songs will deliver something, anything for people to cling onto. If they don’t, the backslide into musical mediocrity looks set to continue with no end in sight.

Berryz Koubou – “Kanjuku Berryz Koubou The Final Completion Box”

Berryz Koubou’s swan song reaches its crescendo this week with a bumper “Best Of” album release. When they say “Completion Box” they really mean it because some versions of this release feature up to 6 discs of musical content alone. That’s not even counting the DVD content which features a whole host of PVs from the group’s catalog. They even throw a new song in there as a cherry on top of an already impressive cake. This really is a great bookend to Berryz’s career and I think fans both new and old will be very happy with what is on offer here. Its been a very impressive 10 year journey and as Berryz ride off into the sunset, this collection will serve as a lasting reminder of everything they accomplished throughout their career.

Negicco – “Rice & Snow”

Negicco complete our trifecta of featured releases this week with their new album “Rice & Snow”. No explanation for the album title was forthcoming in the less than 30 seconds I spent researching for this article so who knows what went on there. Anyway, this is Negicco’s second album (technically their third if you count their “Best Of” release) and it features recent singles like “Tokimeki Headliner” and “Triple Wonderland” as well as a b-side or two for your consideration. The most interesting aspect of this album however is that it features some new songs that have apparently been written by the members themselves. I think it will be interesting to see how those songs differ (or don’t) from the usual songs that Negicco are given to perform by their producer. That alone is enough for me to want to check out this release.

ALSO THIS WEEK:

Deep Snow” by Dianna☆Sweet
I no Hikari / Pajama Party wa Owaranai!” by Icle Girls
Ima wo Ikiru” by Karat☆

So yeah, total unadulterated album-on-album action this week in the featured releases section. Other than that though, there wasn’t anything I particularly wanted to talk about but I know a lot of people are all about that Dianna☆Sweet Kool-Aid so I guess I should mention that before I get lynched. Until next time.

  1. You didn’t listen to AKB48 album so I wanted to recommend some of the new songs to you,…but you are someone who will not be convinced that AKB released a good song or two, so I changed my mind.

    peace

  2. Thanks as always Garry. (Still good after style changes, by the way).

Yeah, I think Deep Snow is great, so I’m glad Dianna Sweet got a shout-out. (Not that it was the Dianna Sweet fans you had to worry about it seems, sigh). I hope people try Karat’s Ima wo Ikiru too. Nothing new or different about it, but I think it’s a nice song, catchy and well-produced, so.

Came across 2 more singles this week. The first is by ビリ→部 (a pun on “Believe” I assume), “☆Nda~do”. It’s some of OSAKA BB WAVE‘s members doing the idol band thing. Haven’t come across a PV, but here’s a live recording. Sounds okay behind the rough performance.

The second is by Sexy J covering Onyankyo Club’s Sailor Fuku wo Nugasanaide.
