This week in music 01.08.2014

This week’s featured releases come from Especia, Idoling!!! and Iwasa Misaki.

Especia – “Ya.Me.Te! / Adventure Wa Giniro Ni

yamete

We’re kicking things off this week with Especia who are releasing their second single, and also jumping on this horrible double a-side bandwagon because why not right? Anyway, if you liked their previous single “Midnight Confusion” the same 80s inspired idol pop is on offer again here. I personally really like 80s pop music so this is very much a home run for me and honestly, I can’t see a reality where this single isn’t in my top 10 at the end of the year. I just don’t know how you can possibly get better than this. What do I have to do to get you to check out this single, because I’ll probably at least consider it. Seriously though, if you only listen to one of my recommendations this year please make it this one.

Idoling!!! – “Gold Experience

goldexperience

Next up we have Fuji TV’s idol group of choice Idoling!!! with their long awaited fifth album “Gold Experience”. I’m a fairly recent convert to Idoling!!! so I’m maybe not the best person to talk about this release but perhaps I can help people in a similar position. “Gold Experience” features previous singles like “MAMORE!!!”, “One Up!!! / Ichigo Gyuunyuu” and “Sakura Thank You” as well as a couple of cover songs, some re-recordings and a rather impressive eight new songs. You can listen to previews of all of the songs in the link provided above but as far as I’m concerned, “Gold Experience” is a really solid album and you could certainly do a lot worse than checking it out and giving Idoling!!! a try.

Iwasa Misaki – “Tomo no Ura Bojou

tomonourabojou

Last up this week we have AKB48’s enka singing beauty Iwasa Misaki and her third single “Tomo no Ura Bojou”. For a lot of people enka is a pretty hard sell I’ll admit that but man, how can you not just appreciate this for being a technically great song. The amount of vocal talent on show here is amazing for someone so young and with each single we’re slowly edging our way towards “real enka” as the purists like to make a fuss about. Also included as a b-side is a cover of AKB48’s smash hit “Koisuru Fortune Cookie” albeit sung in an unfortunately nasally way. Overall though, this is another strong outing from Iwasa Misaki and she seems to be well on her way to having a successful enka career in forty years time.

That’s actually everything that’s coming out this week guys so there’s not much more for me to say apart from check out Especia (and really, everything else this week too) and I’ll see you all in two weeks because there’s literally nothing coming out next week.

  1. “there’s literally nothing coming out next week.” –> Kasai Tomomi is disappoint. HR’s single is coming out too as well. They’re a pretty cool Fukuoka based idol group.

    • Kasai isn’t really an idol anymore though, is she? As for HR, I just don’t know enough about them to write anything that would be worth reading. That’s completely on me but there’s just so many groups these days that it’s hard to be informed about all of them.

I’ll make sure to try harder in the future.

      • Fair enough. I think the readers of this site will still be interested in former idol’s releases though, but that’s up to y’all. Furthermore, I don’t think you have to know a lot about to group to review (or mention) their song. An objective non-invested view might actually a good thing. Besides, it might help the readers learn about the more obscure groups as well. Here’s the PV in case anyone’s interested: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jFVrngbwPMM

  2. Power Spot’s got a new one out this week too, “Kiechae yo”. (I don’t know anything about them, but.)

    • Ahh, I didn’t see that one when I checked HMV. That’s pretty much my baseline when compiling releases for these articles and the calendar.
