This Week in Music 01.02.2013

I know it’s not technically 2013 but I’m only a few hours off for most of you. In any case, before we take a look at what’s coming out this week I’d like to address a few things and let you in on the changes that I’m making to this feature in the coming weeks.

First off, I get asked every now and then why I don’t talk about DVD, Blu-ray, etc releases in this feature. Well, it is called “This Week in Music” but in all honesty I just don’t have the time or interest in writing about concert DVDs and the like. Now, if anyone reading this would like to write a weekly column on this and can reliably meet a Sunday night or Monday morning deadline then please use the contact form linked at the top of the page and we can talk about it. Sadly, I am not your man for such an endeavor.

Secondly, if you go to the “Resources” tab at the top of the site and click “Release Calendar” you’ll find our regularly (at least once a week anyway) updated list of idol single and album releases. It also serves as a sneak preview as to what I’ll be talking about in this column every week and just as a good overall resource so you can keep up with what’s coming out. If you ever see anything missing from the list, hit up that contact form and I’ll take care of it. Help me help you.

Lastly, the more observant of you will notice that there’s a lot more groups on that release calendar than there was last year. Basically if they’re an idol group and their release is up on HMV Japan then they’re on the list. Now, I’m not a crazy person so I won’t be going in-depth on 6 releases every week. However, there will at the very least be an “Also this week” section under the stuff that I do go deep on with any links to blogs/PVs/etc that are available.

If you have any feedback on the stuff I’ve mentioned….you know where I’m going with this. Hit up the contact form, tell me what you like or don’t like and any suggestions you might have. I want to make this as entertaining and informative to read as possible.

Okay, I’m done with this tangent. Let’s check out what’s coming out this week.

AKB48 – “Stage Album Collection”

Yup, of course AKB48 would be the first release of the year and the only thing out this week. What better way to kick off the year than to release/re-release 19 of their stage albums (Team 4’s album comes out in a few weeks) and put the hurt on everyone’s wallets right from the get go. For most people the albums of interest are A4, K4, B3, H1, H2 and 41 (I have no idea how to shorten that one) as they’ve never been give a CD release before. Should you check them out? Sure, I mean it’s AKB so if you like their singles then you’ll probably like their stage music (most of it is better than the singles anyway). I’m not gonna recommend stages to check out because that’s a whole other can of worms, either ask around or just take a punt. You can’t really go wrong here.

Next week sees a slew of releases from various groups that kicks off an insane few weeks on the idol release front. Make sure you check back to hear all about them.

  1. This part made me LOL:

(most of it is better than the singles anyway)

I’ve still yet to hear more than 2 stage songs I enjoy after hearing the majority of the previously released stages in their entirety.
