In the promotional video for their song “AWAKE”, Yanakoto Sotto Mute take their talents to the darkened room. Dance shots place the foursome downstage from a silver screen in their white capes. Emotive gestures fill the choreography, and the group dance as though trapped by the proscenium. Solo shots in the more interesting parts of the theater intercut the dance, and give us glimpses of the red velveteen chairs and the intricate rotations in the projection booth. The main conceit of “AWAKE” pits YSM in a struggle to break free from the imprisoning media circus. You can read all sorts of prisons, with the idol life and its self-imposed systems of rules as the number one offender if you’re inclined. Once the group is freed, those short capes look an awful lot like wings, don’t they? I think I’ve probably expressed how much over the moon I am about YSM’s music, and the reggae grooves filtered through post-hardcore of “AWAKE” once again fit my musical leanings perfectly. “STAMP” receives a physical release on August 16, but the now available digital release includes four exclusive live tracks, which sounds like a better choice to me.
