Watanabe Mayu’s solo graduation song begins with the (now) former member asleep on an old fashioned iron bed decorated with damasked linens. She looks a bit like sleeping beauty here, and given the Western setting I’m sure more than a little intentionality went into that decision. When the nostaligiac ballad begins, Mayu starts looking through the framed photos that decorate her dresser. “Sayonara wa owaru wake janai” plays heavily on the events about to come: graduation is both a goodbye to the things of the past and the awakening of the new morning. As this short version closes, Watanabe Mayu literally takes the light from the memory strewn room and beyond the door like a Prometheus bringing fire. True to life, we’ll have to wait and see what happens in the next chapter of both this PV and Watanabe Mayu. “Sayonara wa owaru wake janai” is included in every version of AKB48’s 50th single, “11gatsu no Anklet”, on sale November 22, 2017.
