The lights are off, but as the arpeggiating strains flit on the piano the luminous spheres ignite. “Naiteiiyo (It’s okay to cry)” builds from the simple beginnings into quite the hopeful little song. Delicate accompaniments interchange with a refreshing live band arrangement for this bittersweet mid-tempo song. The snare drum cracks through the jumping bass of the chorus, and a harpsichord cuts through the broken down acoustic chorus. Dressed in their pure whites, Juice=Juice offer words meant to get the wayward traveler back on the road. The set decorations, those moon-white orbs soon reflect from the water to give the illusion of a nighttime rendezvous with a muse and with fate. The moons also provide an interesting backdrop to the minimal choreography of “Naiteiiyo”. For me, the story here is the confident sound projected from the Juice=Juice’s formidable group of vocalists. Perhaps the song is meant to test their ability to power through such an arrangement without relying on their mainstays. As Juice=Juice cycles through the distinct styles of this, their 10th single, we can think on how the group will present itself in their second life as a seven-member group. “SEXY SEXY / Naiteiiyo / Vivid Midnight” goes on sale April 18, 2018.
