Hakoiri Musume put together a fun album filled with covers from idol music from the 80s & 90s appropriately titled “Seishun no onpu-tachi ~Respect for the 80’s&90’s”. From that February 13 release we get a cover version of CoCo’s “Hunbun Fushigi” (Original version here). If you are in love with Japan from the Golden Age, you’ll probably find yourself at least a little enamored with this rather faithful recording of the song. The orchestral chimes ring out with the sleigh bells and the funked guitars get a bump in the mix, but mostly “Hanbun Fushigi” gives a pretty good impression of the Japanese Bubble Economy. Under the blue sky, the girls of Hakoiri Musume lip to the song under captions of their names (you have no excuse now). Along the way, the girls playfully shove each other out of the way and do their best to make a great first impression. “Hanbun Fushigi” is a charming release that makes me interested in hearing more from the Hakoiri Musume: I will definitely see them here on their next release. You can buy “Hanbun Fushigi” on Hakoiri Musume’s “Seishun no onpu-tachi ~Respect for the 80’s&90’s” on sale now.
