For their third single, the anime crossover idol group 22/7 put themselves on the streets of Tokyo for a dance shot in Shibuya amidst the shoppers passing by the group. Well, kind of. Through the magic of motion captured choreography, the girls of 22/7 possess the capability to project themselves into a stunning variety of animated settings, but wisely choose to keep things “local”. Dramatic moments of the members in near-miss proximities feel more real than they should, which puts us squarely in uncanny valley. The same uncanny feeling is true about the choreography: the rendered avatars of 22/7 move in ways that are subtly different. This makes 22/7 seem more real than real. I can actually feel the time and effort that the members put into the difficult footwork of the choreography of “Rikaisha”. Perhaps now more than ever, I’m ready to see a “live” performance of the group. 22/7’s 3rd single will fill record store shelves on August 22, 2018.
