JKT48 Performs Heavy Rotation

JKT48 recently released a CM for the popular drink “Pocari Sweat”.  This in itself is pretty significant seeing as it’s one of the first things of note that the group has done since they were formed. The video shows the girls frolicking on a sunny beach where they paint a beach house and perform what is arguably AKB48’s most famous song “Heavy Rotation”.

Now, those are some pretty big shoes to fill as I’m sure you’ll all agree. I don’t think any of us expected them to be performing such an important song right off the bat; the real question is how well did they pull it off?

The accents are certainly a bit jarring at first, especially if you’re used to hearing how the original is sung. The fact that they’re singing in Japanese plays a pretty big part in that though so it’s hard to be too critical. After having listened to it a few times I have to say I think they did a pretty good job. It obviously wasn’t going to be exactly the same as the AKB version that we all know and love but credit where credit is due. It will certainly be interesting to hear how they do when they get some songs of their own to perform.

From what little we see of the dance it’s hard to tell just how good the girls actually are. It didn’t appear to be overly impressive but you can’t really judge these things going off of a thirty second CM where the dance shots took up maybe a third of that or less. The jury is still out but I think it’s safe to assume that these girls wouldn’t have passed the auditions if they weren’t talented singers and dancers.

I wouldn’t say that this CM has made me any more interested in JKT48 but they’re off to a good start. Management obviously has a lot of faith in them if they gave them Heavy Rotation right from the get-go so I have faith that they’ll do well for themselves.

What about you guys? How do you think JKT did with the song? Love it? Hate it? Indifferent? Let’s hear your thoughts in the comments.

  1. This is really cool. I wanna see more of them!

  2. It’s kind of funny hearing their accents since I hear it all the time where I live. I think they have potential and there’s a chance I might see them in Malaysia so they peak my interest a bit.

They did a pretty nice job with Heavy Rotation.

  3. The girls are rather cute, and it’s a pretty drastic voice change from the usual high-pitch I’m used to hearing from Japanese idols. I’m liking it. Pretty surprised.

  4. Definitely looking forward to them after seeing more footage….oh god another moneysink for me. NOOOOOO!

  5. I liked it =^.^= It was a lot better than what I expected (“,)

  6. That was…amazing! If only it was longer. This is pretty much one of the first things I’ve seen from JKT so I had no idea of what to expect, I like it.

  7. I dunno, something about the siniging Heavy Rotaion seemed a bit off for me though I can’t really explain it….

As for them being off to a good start, well not surprised when you look at the groups it’s been easier for the newer groups to get going, look at NMB who posted massive numbers for thier debut single, thanks to the ‘akb wave’ (this is nothing against NMB as a group as I actually really, really like them) I expect JKT will be very similar

  8. They have a bigger challenge than the Japan-based 48 groups, but they can come rape my wallet anytime lol
