Anthony says: There really isn’t much information out about Shibata Aya. She’s a straight-laced girl who doesn’t really fool around, make weird faces, be loud, or crack jokes. She’s a good girl. Probably the type that would listen to the teacher quietly without fooling around with fellow students in a class room type setting. A type of girl that all boys in the class find cute but doesn’t stand out because she’s not going to go against the grain or try to stand out. Shibata is someone I REALLY look forward to seeing more of. I think she has a lot of potential and I am excited to see that she is starting to be recognized by management and by fans. You can tell that she needs work on her performance which is fine because one of the best parts of being an idol fan for me is seeing the idols grow as performers and as a personality. I think she definitely has the look to play a bigger role in SKE48 and I think she has the potential to be a relevant member if she makes strides in her performance and letting people know that good girls may not stand out as much as comedians and loudmouths but they are damn cute and can be interesting. Here’s a video of her at CENTER for the new SKE48 single B-Side. Warning: try and not to drown in her eyes that are as wide and deep as the Pacific Ocean.

Garry says: Shibata Aya, the girl with the huge eyes which are either a charm point or absolutely terrifying depending on how you look at it. The girl who has only just recently been given the center position in Shirogumi (albeit most likely only on a temporary basis). Shibata Aya, the girl who hardly anyone knows anything about. The one thing you can say about Shibata Aya is that she’s very much an idol’s idol. She’s nowhere near polished yet as far as her performing skills go (you could argue that almost none of the Team E girls are really there yet) but she’s taking the steps that she needs to in order to get there. In all honesty her personality and character traits of being a reserved girl who doesn’t try to shine the spotlight on herself will likely do her more harm than good, at least in the short term. However, I think that if she sticks to her belief that “Nothing is impossible if you persevere” and sticks to her message to the fans of “I’ll keep improving so that more people will like me more and more! Here I go!” then she’ll do just fine.

This Week in Music 05.16.2012

We’re continuing the theme of AKS suctioning money out of our wallets this week here on “This Week in Music”, with yet another release heading our way. As if to further add to the pain, it was also recently revealed that Not yet’s new single will be coming out at the end of the month too. Guess it’s true what they say; “AKS releases are like buses; you wait around for one then a million come at the same time”.

All joking aside, just a quick mention of NMB48 before we get into the meat of things. It’s not looking like they’re going to get the number one spot (Arashi have that pretty much on lock) but they have managed to at least outsell their previous single “Junjou U-19″, something that was looking a little uncertain at the start of the week. Good thing they had that sudden sales spike of 91k copies thanks to all of the “theater versions” that they shipped. Final sales figures aren’t in at the time of me writing this post but I’d expect them to finish the week having sold around 370k copies. A very reasonable return considering the impending release of this year’s senbatsu election single.

Pointless rambling over and done with, let’s take a look at what’s on offer this week.

SKE48 – Aishiteraburu!

SKE48 provide us with the week’s only release of any real note. “Aishiteraburu” is the group’s 9th single and yes, just like NMB last week and AKB next week it is indeed a summer song. My personal objections to so many releases in such a short space of time aside, I really do like the song. That’s most likely due to the energy that SKE bring to the table with every single release that they put out. Something that you could potentially say a lot of other groups are lacking right now. Having said all of that however, I’m not really feeling any of the b-sides. Hopefully it’s just due to a lack of plays and not because I think they’re terrible but as for right now I guess you can color me unimpressed. I’m probably also still somewhat spoiled by how good the “Kataomoi Finally” b-sides were so take what I’m saying with a grain of salt (as you always should be doing anyway). Overall though, still a very solid release and easily my favorite out of this year’s summer offerings from AKS.

That about wraps it up for this week. Make sure you come back next week because AKB have a new single out and I suppose it’s kind of a big deal if you’re into that sort of thing. Tokyo Girl’s Style also have a new single coming out so look forward to that too. This has been “This Week in Music” brought to you as always by New School Kaidan.

Who can be a successor to Takahashi Minami?

Takahashi is starting to do solo work and has shown ability as a TV talent and will probably graduate to pursue a solo career. Who will succeed her? I personally like Shimada Haruka.

There’s no one that can succeed her.

It should be Oshima. She shouldn’t be the next center but the captain.

Hmm… Shimada… Takamina is cute. Isn’t there anyone else who’s cute and has leadership skills?

Shimada feels different. I think in this new generation, someone like Takeuchi and Nakamura would be more like Takamina.

It’s out of the blue but I think Mayu would be good.

I vote for Mii-chan.

Takahashi Minami can never be replaced. I think it would be Minegishi or Sashihara.

I vote for Yamamoto Sayaka.

In terms of leadership, Yamamoto Sayaka.

Takahashi isn’t graduating so there’s no need for a successor.

I realized that there are successors but there aren’t any at the same time. Someone like Shimada has leadership but will never rank 6th or 7th in the elections. A leader needs to be recognized by the common folk.

Moeno fits the bill. <– You mean Nito.

There’s no Takamina before Takamina. There’s no Takamina after Takamina.

She’s different from Takamina but I think Yokoyama would be good. She doesn’t need to try to be Takamina but after she gained weight, I don’t think she’ll be pushed to become the center. <–She’s the only person post 7th gen that has a shot at being center. She’ll be in the top 16 in the elections this year.

A leader to hold down the entire AKB family would be Jurina or Yamamoto.

Takamina should be able to battle for another 5 years.

Just make Nonaka a captain. <- But she’s not moving.

I think Yokoyama. Takamina herself has said that Yokoyama is similar to her. I don’t think Yamamoto would work. She should stay in a sister group.

Lets just end the discussion with Chikano.

When Takamina is not around, I heard Sashiko takes the leadership role. She’s not the center type so I think she’s a good candidate.

Sashihara is too otaku so I think it’ll be tough. They need a delinquent who cherishes their friends.

Iwata Karen because she seems to be passionate.

What is it like to Oshihen?

Is it when you just get bored of your oshi or is it like in the “Team B Oshi” lyrics when they say one of them will catch your eye during a performance?

Oshihen is ludicrous.

When you notice an appeal your oshimen doesn’t have.
When you start noticing members that are similar to your oshimen.

When you see someone else shine.

When you see extreme gain in weight.

You can oshihen once.
When you notice your oshimen looking down on her fans.

Your oshimen gaining weight. Wears too much make up. Dyes her hair a dirty color. You lose the ability to put up with their unintelligent remarks.
